Nursing is a self-regulated profession governed through the College. A nurse is responsible for practicing in accordance with the standards of the profession, and for keeping current and competent throughout his/her nursing career (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2009).
Qualifications:
• Current Certificate of Competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario required
• Completion of a Cardiac Care Course or equivalent required
• Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required
• Current IV certification and experience with IV initiation required
• Completion of Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification preferred
• Completion of Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) within the last 2 years preferred
• Completion of current Trauma Nursing Care Course (TNCC) within the last 2 years preferred
• Completion of Non-Violent Crisis Prevention Intervention course within the last 2 years preferred
• BScN preferred
• Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Certification in Emergency preferred
• Completion of the Canadian Triage Acuity Scale course preferred or required within 2 years of hire
Skill, Ability and Experience:
• Ability to apply critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, conflict resolution, and prioritization skills to nursing duties required
• Basic proficiency in the use of computers required
• 1 year experience in Emergency Nursing within the last 5 years and/or 2 years recent experience in an Acute Care setting within the last 5 years required
• Recent experience triaging patients preferred
• Experience with electronic nursing documentation preferred
Principal Duties:
• Provides appropriate nursing care and teaching to adult and pediatric Emergency patients and their families
• Participates in Bluewater Health and Emergency Department specific Quality Improvement Initiatives
• Completes continuing education requirements as necessary
• Acts as a coach, mentor, resource, and positive role model for new staff and students
• Other related duties as assigned
