By Kristina Leung, Chantel Watkins, and Cypress Weston, Mediacorp Canada Inc. staff editors (Feb 24, 2025)
Here are some of the reasons why Statistics Canada / Statistique Canada was selected as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers (2025):
- Statistics Canada is testing ways to remove barriers during the evaluation of staffing, including introducing name-blind evaluations to reduce bias in certain types of staffing and conducting exams and interviews before certain screening questions are reviewed (in response to an audit that found minority and Indigenous candidates were ruled out at higher rates during the screening phase) -- the organization is also focused on looking at the feasibility of ensuring equity-deserving representation (of 50 per cent) on hiring assessment boards
- Statistics Canada created the Accessibility Leadership Taskforce and the Accessibility Secretariat, responsible for the development, implementation and oversight of the agency's accessibility strategy and initiatives -- the Accessibility Secretariat also acts as a central support hub for divisions across the organization to build their understanding and capacity for accessibility
- Statistics Canada recently launched a 12-month sponsorship program to accelerate the path to leadership roles for equity-deserving employees for leadership roles -- the program matches participants with executive and management level employees that actively advocate and participate in their career development by inviting participants to attend management meetings and engaging with formal and informal networks

I think the discussions I had with the sponsors and the meetings that he has connected me to via the [Mentorship Plus/Sponsorship program] has already provided me with new perspectives and insights at work. My sponsor takes the initiative to understand my work and provides me with constructive advice to improve in my current role. The meetings that I am invited to attend also broaden my exposure to different areas across the agency. Winnie Chan, protégé
